12:00 noon
"A Musical Celebration of The Hyland House"
Featuring The Guilford Strings

Our History Exposition begins this year with a special musical presentation – a performance of period music by The Guilford Strings.

1:00 pm
"The Other Commemorative Pottery"
With designer, collector & author
Jonathan Rickard.

Commemorative pottery usually celebrates the life and achievements of people – or military and naval engagements – and sometimes even places of note. But there’s another kind of commemoration in the form of pieces of paper with owners’ names, family histories and the like, stuffed inside mugs and jugs, written on the bottoms of bowls and saucers or scratched into the clay itself during the manufacturing process by workers to establish their names or the names of recipients and loved ones. They add mystery and romance to objects that have been carefully passed down, generation after generation.

AN AFTERNOON WITH HANES & RUSKIN

When Joyce Ruskin Hanes and Lee Hanes met in 1980, they merged their antiques businesses and their lives. Since that time, Hanes & Ruskin has exhibited in over 20 antiques shows each year. They are considered to be dealers of national prominence, and experts in their specialties, which include American furniture and appropriate accessories, with an emphasis on British ceramics before 1830; fireplace equipment; samplers and needlework; metalware; and silhouettes. These talks will be informal lectures, and Joyce and Lee encourage you to bring in objects for discussion. >>

2:00 pm
"A Fireside Chat:
Implements of the American Hearth 1750-1850"
With Lee Hanes

Lee’s talk on fireplace equipment will cover andirons, fireplace fenders, jamb hooks, and much of the other implements used for cooking and for keeping the fire going.

3:00 pm
"The Shady Art of Silhouettes"
With Joyce Ruskin Hanes

Joyce will discuss the place of silhouettes in the history of portraiture, the origin of the word silhouette, the various methods of creating silhouettes, and some of the artists whose work raised silhouettes to an art form
